The classic Goose Girl fairy tale retold in the world of The Twelve Kingdoms as an adult fantasy romance.

A dark fairy tale retelling of a princess robbed of rank, husband and even her name.

Nix is nothing. The Princess Natilde—her former waiting woman—attacked her on the journey to wed Prince Cavan, stripping her of everything and taking her place. With no serving skills, Nix becomes a goose girl. Perhaps if Nix keeps her promise never to reveal who she really is, Natilde won’t carry out her vile threats. Prince Cavan entered his arranged marriage determined to have a congenial, if not loving relationship with his future queen—for the sake of both their kingdoms. But, his wife repels him more each day and he finds himself absurdly drawn to the lovely Nix.

With broken vows, anguish and dark secrets between them, Cavan and Nix struggle to find the magic to restore what’s gone terribly wrong… if it ever can be.

Boy, I'm torn on this. First off, Jeffe Kennedy's writing is excellent in terms of spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Secondly, there is a sound plot with a beginning, middle, and end. The author has a real flow to her writing that I enjoy.

But this is a retelling of a fairy tale. It really isn't original and, frankly, the retelling isn't all that interesting. I only read through it because I paid for it. It was short for a novella. Most novels, in the Kindle app, register at a "location" of at least 3,000 - and usually more. This "novella" had a location of 1076, making it about one-third that length. It struck me as a story only. Just a story - based on another story that is 200 years old.

I've read one of Jeffe Kennedy's other stories, which is why I bought this. It was half this length. It was snappy, interesting, and original. I'd rather read that one ten times in a row before I'd read this one again.

Heart Blood The Twelve Kingdoms Book 4 eBook Jeffe Kennedy Reviews

This is one of those horrible novellas that you wish was about 200 pages longer because of the darkness of the beginnings of this story and I am a highly addicted "revenge junkie" and not sure that justice was done (I can't reveal too much since spoilers for a short work like this ruins them).

The story will capture you immediately and as you are made aware of things you will be caught some place between horrified and enraged. The story is exceptional and probably a bit more than PG rated, the only failing I have may be my own and that is after reading hundreds of books with strong female characters I have problems relating to the faint-hearted and fearful heroine of this story.

Bottom Line A story you will remember for a long time, it is told well and delivers the reader into it on an emotional level that is usually not present is shorter works such as this. 4 Stars and maybe more if you can relate to the heroine better than I did .
A well crafted storyline with wonderful characters. As with Nix and Cavan, I was drawn to them. A throughly enjoyable read!
Although the final outcome was predictable, the journey had some twists and surprises. The characters could have been more developed and given more complexity, but that would have probably made the book a lot longer. All in all, it was a good read.
This is a side story in the Twelve Kingdom series. It is pretty much a stand alone and doesn’t impact in the overall story. It was darker theme and seemed rushed, simple, and short. I didn’t care about any of the characters and expect it won’t leave a lasting impression.
Read Thorn instead - this was a bit too short, rushed, and had too much cruel violence for me. I'm not very prudish but the rape scene was a bit much. Not going to read any more of these. Plus it was very "OH OK EVERYTHING HAS BEEN BAD BUT POOF NOW ITS FIXED" to me. Hate to say it but not a fan.
I read this story only after finishing the Twelve Kingdoms, a trilogy that was brilliantly written, within a detailed and interesting world and excellent characters and stories and it really was a huge disappointment that this stand alone story failed on every level that the trilogy excelled. Missing was believability, any reader connection to the characters in this book. I finished it, barely, flipping and skim reading to the end hoping that it would get better and it didn't. I by no means hold this book as an example of how this author can write and I'm glad I read the Twelve Kingdoms Trilogy first. If this had been the book I started with, I'd never have picked up another one from this author.

Saying that, if this IS the first book you've read then ignore it, read Twelve Kingdoms. They're really good and well worth the time and much like me, I'm going to try and pretend I hadn't read this one.
Set in the Twelve Kingdoms (see Mark of the Tala et al.), this story is ostensibly a retelling of Grimm’s “The Goose Girl.” It hits all the major points of the fairy tale, with the princess forced into disguise by her maid, a talking horse, a flock of geese, and a lot of blood and darkness before the happy ending.

What Kennedy adds to the fairy tale makes the darkness bearable. The story begins with the Prince’s point of view, and the Prince Cavan is the prince we all expect, except with motives and mentality verging on three dimensional. Young Princess Natilde is three-dimensional, and so very unlikeable at first what kind of a Princess allows her maid to terrorize her out of her throne, and even her name? But she’s not left to be just nebbish Nix, the goose girl. She endures her pain, learns her strengths, and rises to claim her place. Kennedy gets the details right for these royals—details such as education, integrity, faith, and the wisdom to rule—helping the Prince and true Princess to identify their true, magical relationship. And they are blessed by Glorianna in the process.
